The Pool, the movie by Tarsem Singh, is a 2008 film that is based on Frank McCourt’s 2006 memoir of the same name. The story of an Irish family of immigrants to New York in the early 20th century. It tells their story of their time living together in poverty, but also includes their love for one another. It's not easy being poor in America! You are at risk for hunger, malnutrition and even death on a regular basis. You are at risk for someone of the opposite sex of your dreams just walking on by you, for someone of the same sex to challenge your masculinity. You are at risk of facing discrimination in employment, housing and education. And there are definitely disadvantages in trying to get ahead with the law. But the most difficult burden is when you are born into poverty with little or no inheritance or safety net. It's hard to overcome when you have no safety nets when something goes wrong with your life. The family in this movie refuses to let anything go wrong in their lives, but it is impossible to escape everything that comes along in life. The Pool, the movie is about nine members of the McCourt family. The oldest child in the family is Frank McCourt, who has a poor Irish mother and an absent father. He becomes a teacher which becomes his greatest joy. His greatest struggle becomes trying to get ahead in teaching school while dealing with bureaucrats who are exploiting children for money, corrupt teachers that earn extra money by doing favors for rich parents and teachers who are out to get you for any reason. But there are other struggles within his family, particularly when he met his wife Angela Tribbia which would change their life forever. The rest of the kids are named Brian, Jack, Ellen, Jimmy and Mary Ann. Brian died when he was young, Jack was turned into an alcoholic by his father, Ellen married at a young age for love after being exposed to the world in New York City. Jimmy could not read or write well and Mary Ann had to leave school at a young age to go to work. It wasn't easy for any of them in the early 1900s. Singer/actor Meryl Streep stars as Angela, Frank's wife who became pregnant with their first child by getting raped when she was 12-years-old. The McCourts were struggling financially when Angela met Frank McCourt when she was 14 years old because her mother wanted her to get married to make life better for the whole family. Young Frank is played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who at the time was not well known in America. His career had just started in Hollywood with the movie Mission Impossible 2 in 2000. Angela's friend, who meets Frank in a bar, is played by Adrian Brody. The director of this film was Tarsem Singh, who came to popular attention in 1999 for his film Dil Chahta Hai which showed three Indian young men struggling to get ahead with their lives. The music for this film was written by A R Rahman (who gave us the music for Slumdog Millionaire). cfa1e77820
